Old to Young Case Study in Photoshop by Cassio Braga

Step 1

The first image I selected was a photo of a little girl that we have taken last year in the end of a photo session back in the studio where I work, StudioMe. I chose this image because I really like the expression on her face, she is only 7 years old but was very comfortable in front of the camera.

Right after this I placed the girl’s photo in my composition I selected a photo of an old lady that was taken again in another photo session at StudioMe.

Step 2

Incredibly the two images matched pretty well one I put one over the other, so all I have to do was to create a good transition between the two faces right below the nose line. This transition was done simply by putting the image of the girl in a layer beneath the old lady layer in which I added a layer mask and hid the layer. Then with a very soft brush I started to make some areas visible, but very smoothly and natural.

In order to make the transition very realistic I made some adjustments using the Liquify filter to move the nose a little bit down on the face of the girl.

After that I did a color adjustment to make the hue of the skin of both photos match. To do that I used some Adjustment Layers such as Curves and Vibrance.

Step 3

The next step I started to create the mood for the composition, sort of like how I would like to perceive the idea behind the composition. To do that I created a selection to separate the top from the bottom part. For the top part I created this sort of vignette effect to driver the user attention to the face, like the focal point. For the bottom part, I just did some color adjustments to make sure that the girl really looked as if she was underwater.

Step 4

To make the scene more realistic, specially the underwater part, it was necessary to add some light effects. So in this part of the process I looked for an image to create the caustics effect.

In optics, a caustic or caustic network is the envelope of light rays reflected or refracted by a curved surface or object, or the projection of that envelope of rays on another surface. The caustic is a curve or surface to which each of the light rays is tangent, defining a boundary of an envelope of rays as a curve of concentrated light. Therefore in the image to the right, the caustics can be the patches of light or their bright edges. These shapes often have cusp singularities.

To add some depth I applied a blur to the caustic effect and I also added some blurry air bubbles. Still I thought the image needed even more depth. So I added a layer and applied a render clouds and after that used the Gaussian Blur to make it super blurry, enough to give the idea that the background wasn’t empty.

Now for the underwater part I created a sort of inverted the illumination. To do that I used a Curves Adjustment Layer in which I pulled all the channels up increasing the brightness of the image. I also Inverted the mask to hide this adjustment and then with a very soft brush I started make the layer visible, that way the transition would be much more smooth.

Step 5

The bubbles in the water made the difference in terms of realism. This part took me more time because I had to do some testing. To make the effect as realistic as possible the bubbles needed to reflect the rest of the image, but a little bit darker. However I didn’t like the result of none of the images I was testing, only after quite a lot of time I found the image I was looking for, with some subtle air bubbles. Even though the image might not be the most coherent in terms of photography and with the composition, in my humble opinion they were the ones that created the best effect. Those little bubbles really give this ideas that they are making the aging process turning the old lady into a child.

Technically speaking, the bubble layers were a layer with a very light background with the bubbles, so I simply inverted it and change the Blend Mode to Screen. In case you don’t know, the Scree mode hides all black pixels of the layer.

Still in this step I selected the lenses of the glasses of the old lady layer and then applied a blueish gradient as if it was reflecting the water. The gradient layer was created on top of the old lady layer and then I applied the Soft Light Blend Mode.

Step 6

Here the process was almost done, just some fine tunes and little tweaks. I added some bright spots on the water surface, change the color of the old lady eyes to a more blueish tone and applied a Smart Sharpen only in the top part, that way the two parts would match a little better. The last thing I did here was to apply a Photo Filter Adjustment Layer with blue with 10% of Transparency on top all the other layers. That way all layers would sort of get better blended together.

Step 7

The whole process to create this image took me like 10 hours, however a good amount of this time was just testing different images trying to find the best ones.

Liquid Pour and Splash Photography Technique Using Continuous Light

Tips to achieving a perfect pour splash:

Shutter speed: 1000/sec was just enough to freeze the motion of a pour. Adjust ISO and F-stop for correct exposure. Based on your lighting setup.

Pouring into a round glass: This produced a nice back-splash. A wine glass works well.

Avoid a flood: Cover the floor with plastic and use a large container below your set. Otherwise after 50 tries your house/studio will look like it was hit by a tsunami.

Color: Try Different color liquids, you can use food coloring. Or the actual beverage (wine, beer, milk, etc..). If using red wine we recommend diluting it 50/50 with water so the light will penetrate better.

Kata photography berasal dari kata photo yang berarti cahaya dan graph yang berarti gambar. Jadi photography bisa diartikan menggambar/melukis dengan cahaya.

Jenis-jenis kamera

a) Kamera film, sekarang juga disebut dengan kamera analog oleh beberapa orang.

Format film
Sebelum kita melangkah ke jenis-jenis kamera film ada baiknya kita mengenal terlebih dahulu berbagai macam format/ukuran film.
1. APS, Advanced Photography System. Format kecil dengan ukuran film 16x24mm, dikemas dalam cartridge. Meski format ini tergolong baru, namun tidak populer. Toko yang menjual film jenis ini susah dicari di Indonesia
2. Format 135. Dikenal juga dengan film 35mm. Mempunyai ukuran 24x36mm, dikemas dalam bentuk cartridge berisi 20 atau 36 frame. Format ini adalah format yang paling populer, banyak kita temui di sekitar kita
3. Medium format
4. Large format

Jenis Film
1. Film B/W, film negatif hitam putih
2. Film negatif warna. Paling populer, sering kita pakai
3. Film positif, biasa juga disebut slide. Lebih mahal dan rawan overexposure. Meski demikian warna-warna yang dihasilkan lebih bagus karena dapat menangkap rentang kontras yang lebih luas

Jenis-jenis kamera Film
1. Pocket/compact. Kamera saku. Populer bagi orang awam, sederhana dan mudah dioperasikan. Menggunakan film format 35mm
2. Rangefinder. Kamera pencari jarak. Kecil, sekilas mirip dengan kamera saku. Bedanya, kamera ini mempunyai mekanisme fokusing (karenanya disebut rangefinder). Umumnya menggunakan film format 35mm
3. SLR, Single Lens Reflex. Kamera refleks lensa tunggal. Populer di kalangan profesional, amatir dan hobiis. Umumnya mempunyai lensa yang dapat diganti. Menggunakan film format 35mm. Disebut juga kamera sistem
4. TLR, Twin Lens Reflex. Kamera refleks lensa ganda. Biasanya menggunakan format medium
5. Viewfinder. Biasanya menggunakan format medium

Kamera manual dan kamera otomatis. Kamera-kamera SLR terbaru umumnya sudah dilengkapi sistem autofokus dan autoexposure namun masih dapat dioperasikan secara manual.

b ) Kamera digital
Menggunakan sensor digital sebagai pengganti film
1. Consumer. Kamera saku, murah, mudah pemakaiannya. Lensa tak dapat diganti. Sebagian besar hanya punya mode full-otomatis. Just point and shoot. Beberapa, seperti Canon seri A, memiliki mode manual.
2. Prosumer. Kamera SLR-like, harga menengah. Lensa tak dapat diganti. Shooting Mode manual dan auto
3. DSLR. Digital SLR

Lensa Kamera

mata dari kamera, secara umum menentukan kualitas foto yang dihasilkan lensa memiliki 2 properties penting yaitu panjang fokal dan aperture maksimum.

Field of View (FOV)
tiap lensa memiliki FOV yang lebarnya tergantung dari panjang fokalnya dan luas film/sensor yang digunakan.

Field of View Crop
sering disebut secara salah kaprah dengan focal length multiplier. Hampir semua kamera digital memiliki ukuran sensor yang lebih kecil daripada film 35mm, maka pada field of view kamera digital lebih kecil dari pada kamera 35mm. Misal lensa 50 mm pada Nikon D70 memiliki FOV yang sama dengan lensa 75mm pada kamera film 35mm (FOV crop factor 1.5x)

Jenis-jenis Lensa
a. berdasarkan prime-vario
1. Fixed focal/Prime, memiliki panjang fokal tetap, misal Fujinon 35mm F/3.5 memiliki panjang fokal 35 mm. Lensa prime kurang fleksibel, namun kualitasnya lebih tinggi daripada lensa zoom pada harga yang sama
2. Zoom/Vario, memiliki panjang fokal yang dapat diubah, misal Canon EF-S 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 memiliki panjang fokal yang dapat diubah dari 18 mm sampai 55 mm. Fleksibel karena panjang fokalnya yang dapat diatur

b. berdasarkan panjang focal
1. Wide, lensa dengan FOV lebar, panjang fokal 35 mm atau kurang. Biasanya digunakan untuk memotret pemandangan dan gedung
2. Normal, panjang fokal sekitar 50 mm. Lensa serbaguna, cepat dan harganya murah
3. Tele, lensa dengan FOV sempit, panjang fokal 70mm atau lebih. Untuk memotret dari jarak jauh

c. berdasarkan aperture maksimumnya
1. Cepat, memiliki aperture maksimum yang lebar
2. Lambat, memiliki aperture maksimum sempit

d. lensa-lensa khusus
1. Lensa Makro, digunakan untuk memotret dari jarak dekat
2. Lensa Tilt and Shift, bisa dibengkokan

Ketentuan lensa lebar/tele (berdasarkan panjang focal) di atas berlaku untuk kamera film 35mm. Lensa Nikkor 50 mm menjadi lensa normal pada kamera film 35mm, tapi menjadi lensa tele jika digunakan pada kamera digital Nikon D70. Pada Nikon D70 FOV Nikkor 50 mm setara dengan FOV lensa 75 mm pada kamera film 35mm

Peralatan bantu lain
- Tripod , diperlukan untuk pemotretan dengan kecepatan lambat. Pada kecepatan lambat, menghindari goyangan kamera jika dipegang dengan tangan (handheld). Secara umum kecepatan minimal handhel adalah 1/focal.
Membawa tripod saat hunting bisa merepotkan. Untuk keperluan hunting biasanya tripod yang dibawa adalah tripod yang ringan dan kecil.
- Monopod , mirip tripod, kaki satu. Lebih mudah dibawa. Hanya dapat menghilangkan goyangan vertikal saja.
- Flash/blitz/lampu kilat , untuk menerangai obyek dalam kondisi gelap
- Filter , untuk menyaring cahaya yang masuk. Ada banyak jenisnya :
UV, menyaring cahaya UV agar tidak terjadi hazy pada foto2 landscape, sering digunakan untuk melindungi lensa dari debu.
PL/CPL (Polarizer/Circular Polarizar) untuk mengurangi bayangan pada permukaan non logam. Bisa juga untuk menambah kontras langit

Exposure

jumlah cahaya yang masuk ke kamera, tergantung dari aperture dan kecepatan.
- Aperture/diafragma . Makin besar aperture makin banyak cahaya yang masuk. Aperture dinyatakan dengan angka angka antara lain sebagai berikut: f/1,4 f/2 f/3,5 f/5.6 f/8. semakin besar angkanya (f number), aperture makin kecil aperturenya
- Shutter speed/kecepatan rana . Makin cepat, makin sedikit cahaya yang masuk
- ISO , menyatakan sensitivitas sensor/film. Makin tinggi ISOnya maka jumlah cahaya yang dibutuhkan makin sedikit. Film ISO 100 memerlukan jumlah cahaya 2 kali film ISO 200
Contoh: kombinasi diafragma f/5.6 kec. 1/500 pada ISO 100 setara dengan diafragma f/8 kec 1/500 atau f/5.6 kec. 1/1000 pada ISO 200.

Exposure meter , pengukur cahaya. Hampir tiap kamera modern memiliki pengukur cahaya internal. Selain itu juga tersedia pengukur cahaya eksternal

Exposure metering ( sering disingkat dengan metering )
adalah metode pengukuran cahaya
1. Average metering , mengukur cahaya rata-rata seluruh frame
2. Center-weighted average metering , mengukur cahaya rata-rata dengan titik berat bagian tengah
3. Matrix/Evaluative metering , Mengukur cahaya di berbagai bagian dari frame, untuk kemudian dikalkulasi dengan metode-metode otomatis tertentu
4. Spot metering , mengukur cahaya hanya pada bagian kecil di tengah frame saja

Exposure compensation, 18% grey . Exposure meter selalu mengukur cahaya dan menhasilkan pengukuran sehingga terang foto yang dihasilkan berkisar pada 18% grey. Jadi kalau kita membidik sebidang kain putih dan menggunakan seting exposure sebagaimana yang ditunjukan oleh meter, maka kain putih tersebut akan menjadi abu-abu dalam foto. Untuk mengatasi hal tersebut kita harus melakukan exposure compensation. Exposure kita tambah sehingga kain menjadi putih.

Under exposured = foto terlalu gelap karena kurang exposure
Over exposured = foto terlalu terang karena kelebihan exposure

Istilah stop
Naik 1 stop, artinya exposure dinaikkan menjadi 2 kali.
Naik 2 stop, artinya exposure dinaikkan menjadi 4 kali.
Turun 1 stop exposure diturunkan menjadi 1/2 kali.
Turun 2 stop exposure diturunkan menjadi 1/4 kali.

Kenaikan 1 stop pada aperture sebagai berikut: f/22; f/16; f/11; f/8; f/5,6; f/4; f/2,8; f/2.
Beda f number tiap stop adalah 0,7 kali (1/ akar2).

Kenaikan 1 stop pada kec. Rana sebagai berikut: 1/2000; 1/1000; 1/500; 1/250; 1/125; 1/60; 1/30; 1/15; 1/8; 1/4; 1/2; 1.
Beda speed tiap stop adalah 2 kali

DOF , Depth of Field, kedalaman medan. DOF adalah daerah tajam di sekitar fokus.
Kedalaman medan dipengaruhi oleh besar aperture, panjang fokal, dan jarak ke obyek.
1. Aperture, semakin besar aperture (f number makin kecil) maka DOF akan makin dangkal/sempit
2. Panjang fokal (riil), semakin panjang fokal, DOF makin dangkal/sempit
3. Jarak ke obyek, semakin dekat jarak ke obyek maka DOF makin dangkal/sempit

Pemilihan DOF
- Jika DOF sempit, FG dan BG akan blur. DOF sempit digunakan jika kita ingin mengisolasi/menonjolkan obyek dari lingkungan sekitarnya misalnya pada foto-foto portrait atau foto bunga.
- Jika DOF lebar, FG dan BG tampak lebih tajam. DOF lebar digunakan jika kita menginginkan hampir seluruh bagian pada foto nampak tajam, seperti pada foto landscape atau foto jurnalistik.

Shooting mode
Mode auto , mode point and shoot, tinggal bidik dan jepret
1. Full auto, kamera yang menentukan semua parameter
2. Portrait, kamera menggunakan aperture terbesar untuk menyempitkan DOF
3. Landscape, kamera menggunakan aperture terkecil
4. Nightscene, menggunakan kecepatan lambat dan flash untuk menangkap obyek dan BG sekaligus
5. Fast shuter speed
6. Slow shutter speed

Creative zone
1. P, program AE. Mirip dengan mode auto dengan kontrol lebih. Dengan mode ini kita bisa mengontrol exposure compensation, ISO, metering mode, Auto/manual fokus, white balance, flash on/off, dan continues shooting.
2. Tv, shutter speed priority AE. Kita menetukan speed, kamera akan menghitung aperture yang tepat
3. Av, aperture priority AE. Kita menentukan aperture, kamera mengatur speed
4. M, manual exposure. Kita yang menentukan aperture dan speed secara manual

Komposisi dan Angle
Komposisi adalah penempatan obyek dalam frame foto
Angle adalah sudut pemotretan, dari bawah, atas, atau sejajar
Komposisi dan angle lebih menyangkut ke seni dari fotografi. Faktor selera fotografer sangat besar pengaruhnya.

Kassian, fotografer pertama indonesia!!!

Kassian Cephas (15 Februari 1844 - 1912) dapat dianggap sebagai pelopor fotografi Indonesia. Ia adalah seorang pribumi yang kemudian diangkat anak oleh pasangan Adrianus Schalk dan Eta Philipina Kreeft. Nama Kassian Cephas mulai terlacak dengan karya fotografi tertuanya buatan tahun 1875.

Cephas lahir dari pasangan Kartodrono dan Minah. Ada juga yang mengatakan bahwa ia adalah anak angkat dari orang Belanda yang bernama Frederik Bernard Fr. Schalk. Cephas banyak menghabiskan masa kanak-kanaknya di rumah Christina Petronella Steven. Cephas mulai belajar menjadi fotografer profesional pada tahun 1860-an. Ia sempat magang pada Isidore van Kinsbergen, fotografer yang bekerja di Jawa Tengah sekitar tahun 1863-1875. Tapi berita kematian Cephas di tahun 1912 menyebutkan bahwa ia belajar fotografi kepada seseorang yang bernama Simon Willem Camerik.

Publikasi luas foto-foto Cephas dimulai pada tahun 1888 ketika ia membantu membuat foto-foto untuk buku karya Isaäc Groneman, seorang dokter yang banyak membuat buku-buku tentang budaya Jawa, yang berjudul: In den Kedaton te Jogjakarta. Pada buku karya Groneman yang lain: De Garebeg's te Ngajogjakarta, karya-karya foto Cephas juga ada disitu.

Dengan kamera barunya yang bisa dipakai untuk membuat "photographe instanee", Cephas mulai menjual karya-karya fotonya. Sejak itu karya-karyanya mulai dikenal dan dipakai sebagai suvenir atau oleh-oleh bagi para masyarakat elit Belanda ketika mereka akan pergi ke luar kota atau ke Eropa. Misalnya ketika JM. Pijnaker Hordijk, pemilik sewa dan seorang Vrijmetselaar terkemuka akan meninggalkan Yogyakarta, ia diberi hadiah album indah berisi kompilasi karya-karya foto Cephas dengan cover indah yang dilukis oleh Cephas sendiri dan bertuliskan "Souvenir von Jogjakarta". Album-album semacam itu yang berisi foto-foto sultan dan keluarganya juga kerap diberikan sebagai hadiah untuk pejabat pemerintahan seperti residen dan asisten residen. Keadaan seperti ini tentunya membuat Cephas dikenal luas masyarakat kelas tinggi, dan memberinya keleluasaan bergaul di lingkungan mereka.

Cephas mulai bekerja sebagai fotografer kraton pada masa kekuasaan Sultan Hamengkubuwono VII. Karena kedekatannya dengan pihak kraton maka ia bisa memotret momen-momen khusus yang hanya diadakan di kraton semisal tari-tarian untuk kepentingan buku karya Groneman.

Cephas juga membantu pemotretan untuk penelitian monumen kuno peninggalan zaman Hindu-Jawa yaitu kompleks Candi Loro Jonggrang di Prambanan yang dilakukan oleh Archaeologische Vereeniging di Yogyakarta. Proyek ini berlangsung tahun 1889-1890. Dalam bekerja, Kassian Cephas banyak dibantu Sem, anak laki-lakinya yang paling tertarik pada dunia fotografi seperti ayahnya. Kassian Cephas memotret sementara Sem menggambar profil bangunannya.

Ia juga membantu memotret untuk lembaga yang sama ketika dasar tersembunyi Candi Borobudur mulai ditemukan. Ada sekitar 300 foto yang dibuat Cephas untuk penggalian ini. Pemerintah Belanda mengalokasikan dana 9000 gulden untuk penelitian ini. Cephas dibayar 10 gulden per lembar fotonya. Cephas mengantongi 3000 gulden (sepertiga dari seluruh uang penelitian). Jumlah yang sangat besar untuk ukuran waktu itu.

Cephas adalah pribumi satu-satunya yang berhasil menguasai alat peradaban modern, itu juga yang membuatnya diakui di kalangan golongan masyarakat kelas tinggi. Buktinya ia bisa menjadi anggota istimewa Perkumpulan Batavia yang terkenal itu. Tahun 1896 ia dinominasikan menjadi anggota KITLV (Lembaga Linguistik dan Antropologi Kerajaan) atas dedikasinya memotret untuk penelitian Archaeologiche Vereeniging. Ia benar-benar diterima menjadi anggota KITLV pada tanggal 15 Juni 1896. Ketika Raja Chulalongkorn dari Thailand berkunjung ke Yogyakarta tahun 1896, ia mendapat hadiah berupa tiga buah kancing permata. Bahkan Ratu Wilhelmina dari Belanda memberi penghargaan berupa medali emas Oranje-Nassau kepada Cephas pada tahun 1901.

Cephas sendiri sudah sejak tahun 1888 memulai prosedur untuk mendapatkan status "gelijkgesteld met Europeanen" atau "disetarakan dengan kaum Eropa" untuk dirinya sendiri dan anak-anak laki-lakinya: Sem dan Fares; suatu prosedur yang dimungkinkan oleh UU Kewarganegaraan Hindia Belanda pada masa itu.
